I think you should lean towards Royal or Celebrity and leave Carnival out of the mix altogether.
Both of those cruise lines offer plenty of activities for all ages and still have above average services and food.

We just completed a Caribbean cruise on the Celebrity Solstice this past Sunday. That is a really nice ship and its new since it was launched in 2008. It has free programs for kids and we saw quite a few younger ones on the ship but not many teens. http://www.celebritycruises.com/plancruise/ships/ship.do;jsessionid=0000KLQemZf62YN8NlG92yQrScB:12hdebebp?shipCode=SL

I have also cruised on many RC ships and while I have not been on the Serenade I have been on its three identical sister ships. So I know well its layout. I would rate it better for on-board activities than Celebrity. RC has the free Adventure Ocean program on its ships and a special area of the ship for teens to hang out called Fuel, a teen disco. The ship has the rock climbing wall, a mini-golf course, a kiddie pool and water slide, a basketball court and a video arcade. You can take a look at the ships features on this link: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacruise/ships/class/ship/home.do;jsessionid=0000IBraGcgQkd5gLzt2HLM9s66:12hbiocus?br=R&shipClassCode=RD&shipCode=SR

I have never cruised on Carnival but it is the budget cruise line and it caters to families and kids. You can look at the ship’s highlights on this web link: http://www.carnival.com/cms/fun/ships/carnival_liberty/default.aspx?shipCode=LI

My suggestion, go with Royal Caribbean.

Royal & Carnival have a lot of activities for kids 3 to 17yrs old. If the kid is older he might apreciate the celebrity solstice class ships they are very nice , but have less for kids to do.
